Fund assists Canadian women entrepreneurs to grow their businesses and expand market opportunities

Medlior Health Outcomes Research Ltd. has been selected as a recipient of the Women Entrepreneurship Fund by the Government of Canada. This unique fund provides support to women to grow their businesses and facilitate their pursuit of opportunities in markets abroad.

“I am extremely proud and honoured to receive funding from the Government of Canada to grow my health research organization and expand our international business,” said Medlior Founder, Tara Cowling.

Medlior Health Outcomes Research Ltd. was started in 2008 by Cowling and is an independent Canadian research consultancy based in Calgary, Alberta. Medlior delivers robust research services to meet the needs of diverse audiences and inform health decision-making. Led by Cowling, Medlior’s core purpose is to positively impact global health with rigorously conducted research and data analysis.

“We inform decision-making with robust evidence,” said Cowling. “Every day there are multiple decisions that need to be made in the health sector, and we provide high-quality research to inform these decisions.”

The Women Entrepreneurship Fund is delivered through Western Economic Diversification Canada and is part of the Government of Canada’s commitment to advancing gender equality, women’s economic empowerment and supporting women entrepreneurs. On May 3, the Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of Small Business and Export Promotion, announced a $900,000 investment in nine Calgary-area, women-led companies. Each successful recipient will receive an investment of up to $100,000.

“Our government believes that women’s economic empowerment is not just the right thing to do; it’s good for the bottom line. That’s why we launched the Women Entrepreneurship Strategy, a plan to double the number of women-owned businesses by 2025,” said Minister Ng. “Our investments in women-led businesses like Medlior Health Outcomes Research Ltd. will help us achieve this goal.”

For Canada, this strategy has the potential to add $150 billion in incremental GDP by 2026

For Medlior, these funds will allow the firm to advance their marketing efforts to reach a larger international audience, grow their business and affect real change both locally and internationally.

“The fund will be used to travel to European conferences to exhibit our services and present our research utilizing the Alberta health system data,” said Cowling. “It will also allow us to further develop our proprietary online tool, Real World Radar, to enhance research collaboration with electronic health data, and hire more graduates from the University of Calgary to support our increased volume of work.”
