The two words ‘information’ and ‘communication’ are often used interchangeably, but they signify quite different things. Information is giving out; communication is getting through.” -Sydney J. Harris
A successful provider-patient relationship requires effective communication. Strong communication results in greater trust and transparency with higher engagement in shared decision-making, and ultimately, improved patient outcomes.
One simple and effective way to improve provider-patient communication is through the use of Patient Reported Outcomes Measures (PROMs). PROMs are standardized self-reported data collection tools (surveys) used to assess a patient’s physical, mental and social well-being.
These tools provide an excellent bridge between provider and patient. PROMs measure physical function, pain and quality of life from the best source of the information: the patient. PROMs data allows for the patient be a participant in their care, rather than just a recipient. The provider can transform this data into meaningful and actionable information, and with the help of the patient, can create informed treatment plans, specific to each individual and their unique needs.
